DMC pulls down another podium finish at round two of the ASX
The CDR Yamaha duo of Daniel McCoy and Lawson Bopping again turned in strong performances before a standing room only crowd as the Australian Supercross Championship took centre stage at the Moto GP at Phillip Island.
With thousands of fans lining the track as the main event blasted from the starting gates, McCoy and Bopping needed to consolidate on their good start to the series at Dubbo just a fortnight ago.
McCoy slotted into second place early in the race before dropping a spot to Jay Marmont. He then stayed close to Marmont as the 20 lap main event progressed but never close enough to make a serious passing attempt resulting in a third place finish and his second podium result in the championship.
His combined 2-3 results from the opening two rounds, leaves McCoy in second place in the championship and feeling good about his chances at the remaining two rounds.
“The track today was tight and it felt like we were racing an indoor event like we used to 10 years ago. Good starts were vital as was protecting the inside in corners,” McCoy explains.
“I was able to get through the opening lap chaos without too much trouble and keep it pretty clean for the rest of the race. I could see both Jay and Chad ahead of me but could never really get onto the back of them.
“Another podium is good and I’m really enjoying my time at CDR Yamaha. We still have two rounds to go and it would nice to continue my podium run at the final two events.”
Team-mate Lawson Bopping shadowed McCoy for nearly the entire main event to give the CDR team a 3-4 finish for the round. Bopping was outside the top five on the opening lap but was able to make some quick passes and slot into fourth place just prior to the half-way point.
Bopping challenged McCoy on a few occasions as the laps unfolded, showing him a wheel in many of the 180 degree turns, but couldn’t get his YZ450F past. As the pair waged battle, their speed allowed them to inch closer to second place in the final stages of the race.
“The first couple of laps were pretty hectic as riders were going everywhere and there was plenty of hitting and rubbing going on. I tried to keep it on two wheels and then start working my way forward.
“I passed into fourth and then it seemed like the top four of us were running a similar pace and it was hard just to make time let alone making a pass. Still, it was a consistent ride and a bit better than Dubbo, so we are heading in the right direction,” Bopping said.
Team manager, Craig Dack, was satisfied with the teams’ results and encouraged his riders and team to keep working hard.
“Third and fourth is a good result for the guys as the only two riders in front of them were Chad Reed and Jay Marmont. Daniel again used a good start to his advantage and logged a solid 20 laps while with an improved start, I think Lawson has the speed to win races, so we need to continue to work with him to find a way to get him up the front early.”
“It was also a great event with the crowd close to the action and also wandering through the pits. The atmosphere was good and it’s a credit to the organisers of both the GP and the Australian Supercross Championship that we were able to be part of this event. Hopefully it is the start of bigger and better things,” Dack concludes.
Round three of the championship hits Toowoomba in Queensland on November 11 before backing up for the final round in Newcastle a week later.
