Jed Beaton continues to turn heads in the 2024 Australian SX1 Supercross Championship, capping off the season with a career-high second-place finish at the final round held at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne.
Racing in front of the largest crowd in Australian supercross history, Beaton delivered a standout performance in a star-studded international field, proving his ability to rise to the occasion on the big stage.
The notion that Jed Beaton is solely a motocross specialist can now be firmly laid to rest. Over the past seven weeks, Beaton has demonstrated remarkable adaptability, steadily refining his supercross skills and raising his game with each round. From a somewhat tentative start at the season opener, he transformed into a genuine podium contender, securing third place at round four and culminating with a sensational second-place finish at Marvel Stadium.
In the Triple Challenge format, which combines results from three main events to determine the night’s overall standings, Beaton impressed with consistent 5-2-2 results. This consistency not only highlighted his pace but also his ability to handle the intense demands of the unique race format.
His podium finish on the night also propelled him to fourth in the overall championship standings, finishing just four points behind Luke Clout in third.
“It’s been a good championship for me and one that I’ve really enjoyed,” Beaton said after the final race. “As soon as the ProMX Championship wrapped up, I focused entirely on supercross. It’s been so long since I last raced it, but seeing that effort reflected in the results is rewarding. I think I still have more room to improve.
“The CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team have been incredible all year, and my bike has been awesome in both championships. My brother Ross played a big role in helping me get up to speed, and it’s been fun stepping out of my comfort zone and racing in stadiums again.
“I’m already looking ahead to next year and thinking about how I can take things to the next level,” he concluded.
A Tough Night for Matt Moss
While Beaton ended the season on a high, Saturday night showed fleeting promise for teammate Matt Moss before the harsh realities of racing took their toll. After a season marked by crashes and struggles, Moss finally displayed his raw speed in Melbourne. He clocked impressive lap times in qualifying and Superpole and carried that momentum into the opening race with a strong fourth-place finish, emerging as the best-placed domestic rider behind the American stars.
However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse in the subsequent races. A heavy crash in race two while battling inside the top five resulted in a DNF, leaving Moss battered and sore. The third race proved no kinder, compounding what had been a challenging season for the experienced rider.
“It’s been a hard supercross season, and I’m so disappointed with how it’s turned out,” Moss admitted. “I was thrilled to get the ride with the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team, and they’ve been amazing, but the results just haven’t come.
“I worked hard leading up to round one, but it’s been a struggle since then. I felt good on the bike for the first time all season here in Melbourne, and I had the speed to challenge. But the crashes in the last two races made for a frustrating end.
“Thanks to Craig and the team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I just wish I could have delivered the results we all wanted,” Moss concluded.
