FOAM AND LOAM… WHERE MOTO MEETS SURF!

Fl Mxstore 14
The first Foam and Loam event had its challenges but overall it was a hit!

The crew from MX Store recently held Australia’s first Moto/Surf competition at Bar Beach, Newcastle, and Maitland District MCC. Local surf legend Julian Wilson got behind the event, and by the looks of the highlight reel, plenty of crew were having a rad time in the water and the dust. Here’s the report of what went down, and we think we’d better polish up our surfing skills for next year’s event!

Big smiles, fast laps, and a tonne of fun, we had 120 frothers join us for a huge weekend of action at Bar Beach Newcastle and Maitland District MCC on February 22-23 2025 for the inaugural Foam and Loam surf x moto event!

Bringing a surf x moto event to the shores of Australia is an idea we’ve been throwing around for a while now, we are beyond stoked that we were able to bring the vision to life with the help of Julian Wilson and our event sponsors. After an incredible weekend it’s safe to say that this is just the beginning for Foam and Loam, thank you to everyone who got involved, we hope to see you all again for the next one, and if you missed out this time you probably had FOMO and we’ll see you too at Foam & Loam 2!

Smiles all round

Surf

The vibes were high from the get-go as teams of four donned the coloured rashies to surf 30min heats in the fun 2-3 foot waves at Bar Beach. All-round shredding from The Breadsticks earned them the Open Class win for day 1 of the competition, Stany crew pinched the top spot in the Vets by just 0.16 and a consistent showing from the Happy Valley Monsters saw them land on top in the mixed division. As expected, Julian Wilson delivered a stand-out performance with an explosive air reverse scoring 9.50 out of 10 points. We ran some novelty games to keep the kids and bigger kids engaged, the ODI push-up competition was a hit with a bunch of product from ODI, Troy Lee Designs, and Maxima.

Having a team with good surfers and moto riders was a challenge.

A pair of Oakley shades were won by one of the boys on NFI with an insane beach run featuring plenty of thrills and spills, then the boys backed it for the Rivvia Projects boardshorts with a squat competition that had the legs burning, ultimately won by Sam Penny but the young Louie Stephens gave him a run for his money! Jacob Peacock took home a custom Nuevo Camino surfboard, which was shaped, glassed, and finished ready for the event on Saturday. “I can’t believe it, it’s too nice to surf, this board is going on the wall!” said Jacob after a photo with the legendary Julian Wilson.

From all reports the MX section could have been longer, but for a first-time event things will only improve from here!

Moto

Wrapping up on Saturday we drove inland to Maitland DMCC for Sunday’s motos. The club marked out a combined MX and enduro track that weaved through tight, dusty tree lines, linking together portions of the moto track to form a 7-minute lap time. The Red Bull truck brought life to the pits, pumping music as teams strategised and swapped transponders, logging laps throughout the 2x 1.5hr motos to bring it home to the checkered flag. The track format and timing system had it’s challenges throughout the day, we thank everyone for their patience and we look forward to applying everything we’ve learned from this first surf x moto event to make it bigger and better for the next one!

The dusty conditions and enduro section tested most riders.

Our highlight of the event was the crew of people it brought out, the mixed division was no different and proved to be tight competition to take the podium positions. Dee’s Nuts team members Rachel, Bec and Hayley from the South Coast joined forces with legendary moto coach Dee Wilson and provided the most entertaining team of the weekend, always cracking jokes, sharing big smiles, charging hard, and having a good time. Happy Valley Monsters from the Sunny Coast landed on top, 2nd – Chicken Joes Tenders, and 3rd – Speed Machines.

Stylin!

The Vets class was highly contested, after trailing behind Stany Crew and the Factory Faires back in 5th place on Saturday, the Redhead Bluff Bashers had something to prove in Sunday’s motos. The Factory Fairies and Redhead Bluff Bashers went head to head for 1st and 2nd in each moto making it a close race for the podium, but at the end of it all the consistency of the Factory Fairies earned them the win followed by the Redhead Bluff Bashers and Stany Crew in third place.

Open class was wide open from start to finish! The Breadsticks dominated the surfing and looked to carry the momentum into moto, but it was Lusty Albek’s skill and speed on the track that earned them the event win, followed by Surf n Turf with Jack Moir shredding on his Stark in 2nd and a tight finish between Terra Foamer in 3rd place and Washed Up Locals in fourth.

Winners are grinners.

Reflecting on the weekend, Julian Wilson said “Foam and Loam was the most satisfying weekend I’ve ever been apart of. The respect and camaraderie between the two sports that I’ve grown with an innate love for, was a dream to reality moment. Everyone worked together within their teams to make sure the good times flowed through the beach and track environment. I personally love seeing people having a crack at things that are well out of their comfort zones like it was for a lot of people. The beauty of the event is that you can make up for it in the sport you’re good at.”
