iPhone Pics - Too Easy

Ben Foster - Tuesday, March 02, 2010
I was going through my phone the other day and came across a whole stack of random pics that I've snapped across the last six months or so... pretty cool things those iPhones.. Anyway, have a geez.

PS: Told you I'd hold up my end of the bargain with Blogs.. two times within a week! Well cut my legs off and call me shorty.

My Scar fresh after I took the cast off. The result of a plate and nine screws being inserted.

Makes you wanna ride?

Brisbane SX from the back of the stands.

Looking down on Canberra SX as night falls.

My jersey collection... more quality than quantity. L to R: Maddo, Reedy, Metty and J-Law.

My wrist was looking a bit mangoed after my stack...

My new toy... Yamaha Superjet painted by Brown's Grafix. So much fun!

My daughter wrenches on Jimmy Blackwood's bike, while DMC instructs.

A birds eye view of the track we were supposed to ride at this year's Husqvarna launch. It got rained out. I cried. But, Feen's from the Paul Feeney Group took us for a joyflight over the joint in Mick Doohan's helicopter. Epic trip. Thanks Feen.

My latest lid... The logo on the side is a little insight into what we've got going on....

Chad Reed's infringement notice from the Parrmatta round of SuperX. He was slugged with a whopping $50 fine for taking a leak in the starters box. Reckon he'll be able to afford it? Good to know the big dogs are still liable for the rules.

Birds eye view of the track we did end up riding for the Husky launch. It's also Dan Reardon's practice facility when he's back home.

No excuse

Ben Foster - Friday, February 26, 2010
Faarrk... it's been a while.. No real excuse other than my very own uselessness. There's been plenty of shit happening, so it's not like I've had nothing to write about. So, sorry.. There, OK, I've said it, now let's move on shall we.

Well, in the world of DA there's plenty of shit going down. We just got copies of the latest issue today with Ryan Villopoto on the cover. It's a cracker, do yourself a favour and have a read. Cam Baird's shots for our 'Faces of Supercross' feature are nothing short of brilliant (like everything he does) and my words to match, well, far from brilliant, but hopeffuly they'll give you a chuckle. The 450 MX shootout was a corker and a bloody close one at that.... well, so I'm told, I couldn't ride the bikes because I rode like a mutant and crashed a few weeks before it. I've now got more metal in my right arm than the harbour bridge and have only just learned how to wipe my arse with my right arm again... Anyway, the feedback from the test this year was that not one of the bikes was bad, and we even threw in Husaberg's closed circuit bike just to mix it up. It's no MXer, but not far off it. It'd be a bloody good option for the clubman and grass track racers among us. So who won?.... ha!  Nice try, you're gonna have to buy it for that one.

As for industry news, well, there's rumours of yet another bike mag starting up in the coming months. Nothing like a bit of competition and definitely some selection for you guys. Be interesting to see what they come out with... we've lost our old Photog Ikapture to them, which sucks, but hey, life rolls on. It allows us to use some guys haven't previously been able to, and let me tell you, some of the pics I was looking at last night from our newest contributor will blow your minds. This guy is mental.

Other than that.. there really is heaps, like AMA SX again this weekend, Aus MX Nationals kicking off shortly, AORC coming up and the A4DE sneaking up like a Rogan Josh at 3am.

Anyway, it's friday arvo. I've got some shit to finish before I head off for the weekend and I don't particularly want to sit in Sydney's traffic all night. PS> Sydney really is the shittest place in Australia as far as traffic goes.. It's crook.

Have a good weekend folks. Promise I'll keep up this blog a lot more regular than before.

Peace,

Benny

EAST TIMOR - I'm ALIVE!

Ben Foster - Friday, October 23, 2009

Well, just got back from East Timor... wow, what an incredible experience. I had an amazing time and was blown away from the moment I got there. While there was a definite sense of worry, I can assure you, we didn't have any problems over there. Even if something were to happen like that, there are more military and police over there than there is drunken backpackers in Australia. It's a country on the move and they are trying very hard to build it into the adventure sports capitol of the world. They had the Tour de Timor recently (a 400km MTB race around the island) and are looking at Adventure events and more and more MX. There's shitloads of hills and trailriding around the place, and the locals were all extremely accepting of what we were doing. Anyway, stay tuned for a full run down next issue, till then, here's some images from my travels.

The local kids loved the bikes. As we rode through town they'd come running out of their houses (read - tin sheds) to slap your hand or get a glimpse of the bikes. It was pretty cool. We all flicked them some stickers, food, fresh water etc when we could.

There was numerous occasions where we were allowed to just ride about town on the roads. With little to no road rules in Dili, it made for some interesting trips. I swear we didn't do burnouts around the police cars... OK, maybe we did, but man it was fun.

As I said, no road rules. So with the temps in the high 30's low 40's range, it was a fight for who got to ride in the back of the utes. This is on the way into one of the local children's hospitals where we did a riding demo and handed out food and drinks.

Isac Elliot (guy in the purple shift gear) is my new hero. The guy has no feeling from the waist down after a motorcycle crash, yet still rides his arse off... and is frigging quick too! He's taken out numerous MX titles in NT, ridden Finke twice and a whole lot more. Stay tuned for more on the guy. Here he gives some words of encouragment to the kids in chairs in Timor.

As Isac finished his speech, this local dude busted out of the crowd on this crazy three-wheeled contraption. The cranks weren't off-set like a normal pushy, so his arms were working like windmills. he was showing off to the crowd with good response, but when he threw a chain and nearly ate shit, the crowd went banana's. One of the funniest things I have ever seen.

The coastline along Dili is pretty amazing. There's reef within about 20m of the beach keeps the bays and water calm pretty much all the time. The water is toasty warm and clear as crystal.

You can buy just about anything on the side of the road in Dili. Fish, like this guy has are the most common, but I saw Fuel in water bottles (which looked more like piss than fuel), phone cards, coke, lollies and everything inbetween. It's amazing. A little hut like this will be stacked to the roof with Coke and lollies and then the hut 3m along will be exactlly the same. makes you wonder how they make money?

Me (left) chilling with the presidents private guards,

The president invited us up to his personal house (unheard of for over there). It was pretty mental, the tough bastard was gunned down in the exact same spot not so long ago. he was a legend though, and very welcoming of us all. He actually rides. Got a "Fake Harley" but "loves nothing more than cruising the roads in the heat!"..... Legend.

This is the El Presidente's pet monkey. I dubbed him with the name "Cods"... I think you can see why. he was a funny bugger.. even more so when he crapped in his own hand and flung it at Lindores!

The traffic in Dili was nuts. If your horn was louder, or your car was bigger you seemed to have right of way. The scooters... well, they just go where ever the hell they want.

The Timorese people are nuts about their soccer. Just about every afternoon, they were on the pitch, even know it was 40 degrees!

The beaches at the eastern end of the island were straight out of a postcard. Nice, warm sunsets, clear water.... and a US war ship in the background!

This 60 foot Jesus statue is right at the Eastern tip of the island. 3000 stairs later and you're right at his feet. It's an amazing view from up there though, and the statue is pretty damn cool.

Believe it or not, I actually did go over there for the riding. We were in the international class, while the locals duked it out in an array of classes. Some of the little buggers were REALLY quick. Most of them though were riding these crazy bitsa bikes. So cool.

The track was super fun. It was a mix of MX and small SX... I guees a stadium X kinda track back home. There was 2 ryhthm lanes, a big 80-90foot double in the middle and mix of flat and bermed corners.... the crowd was nuts, all 23,000 of them. They were 20 deep around the outside (like you can see here) and sitting on the barbed wire fence, swinging from trees... just to catch a glimpse.

Joe Sheppard was the man behind organising the RFDmx Underground Freestyle Tour (which this was the final event for). He's done a stellar job of offering our underground FMX riders in Aus an option to compete. To top things off, he also won the event and championship! He's got an unbelievable style and the boy can cut some fast laps around a MX track  too!

Matt Lindores is one of the funniest blokes I've ever met. Made me laugh with just about every word that came out of his mouth.. to top it off, he can bloody ride a dirt bike. He's got MASSIVE whips (either turndown or conventional) and was easily the crowd favourite. With strong winds, the comp was delayed heavily, but Matty spent hours out riding along the edge of the crowd, doing burn outs and wheelies.. you should have heard them going nuts. I think they've actually voted him as the next president.

The energy drink craze is a global thing... even the young Timorese brats wanted caffiene hit..

Motocross in East Timor???

Ben Foster - Saturday, October 10, 2009

An east Timor beach....

It's come up quicker than a dodgy servo pie at 3am... Yep, this wednesday I'm jumping on numerous silver/white and whatever other colour the planes are now, and heading to East Timor... yep, you read correctly, EAST TIMOR to race motocross!

James Hawker from Darwin contacted me a few months back about it through a group of Aussie FMX boys I know the RFDmx crew. They've been doing an underground freestyle competition series here in Aus and the final round will be held in East Timor. James is also tieing in a MX race there as well with international riders as well as a class just for the locals, which is going to be wild. Apparently they turn up on everything from step through scooters, to postie bikes, to well, whatever they can fashion into some sort of dirt bike.

James has hooked me up with a 2008 CRF450R, so I'm looking forward to getting on it and dialing the place in.

Timor isn't known as being the safest or most stable place around, but James assures me we're in no harm where we'll be.

I'm pumped.. I love our sport and the fact that I can travel to another country where I'd never really think there'd be a place for it amazes me. Just that common bond of bikes I guess..

Anyway.. I'll do my best to keep blogging for the duration of the trip. Not too sure what the internet is like over where we are staying. Regardless, I'll take a shitload of pics and keep you updated as best i can.

Till then.

Benny

Google Earth and MyShirt

Ben Foster - Tuesday, September 22, 2009
Just throwing it out there.. but how cool is Google Earth? I could lose an afternoon there without much effort.

You can search for new patches of bushland to ride, get overhead shots of your favourite motocross track, and let's face it... you can never really get tired of Googling your own house.. Even know I see it in the flesh every day, there's something about watching the satellite track in from outer space and hunt down your pad... it's cool.

Also, another cool one. Myshirt.net.au The site isn't fully functional yet, but you can design your own t-shirt and have it printed for $30! They aren't shirt t-shirts either.. get creative and stitch up your mates. Get some made for the next group ride or boys weekend away.. cracker..

Friday Craziness

Ben Foster - Friday, August 21, 2009
I dunno if it's the fact that I've had a masssssssssssiive week at work, or that I've just smashed one of Red Bull's new Energy Shots, but I'm feeling a tad bit crazy...

(Don't know if you've seen the Red Bull shots, but they are all the goodness of a can, crammed into a 60ml shot!.. yes they are as gnarly as they sound!)

What got us through the latest issue... read the label below each bottle for a sneak peak of what's in the mag!

Ah well, it's Friday.. Here's some cool pics I found on a random Google search..

Have a good weekend folks..

Benny

PS: I'm riding the 2010 range of KTM EXC's next week, should be a cracker!

What's a good blog post without him?

For real? notice the lack of shoes too.. Hate the gravel rash if he goes down.

Beats walking...

So true......

How I generally feel on a Friday arvo...

Till next time folks..

Project Suzuki RM144

Matt Bernard - Wednesday, August 19, 2009

I have just completed the haul up to Newcastle thrown the handbrake on and pinned it back to work after a visit to Jay Foreman’s workshop to drop off "my" bike.  The Project Suzuki RM144, at the moment, is still in its 125cc clothes, however, it now sits idle at Jay's waiting to be stripped down and built into the weapon that will be, the Dirt Action Project Suzuki RM144.  I have a V-Force Reed Block ready to go in, a Bud Racing exhaust on the way, my cylinder is going to have some work done by Electrosil and a Wiseco Piston will be slotted in to finish the project.

So far, the bike has been a blast to ride. I have done plenty of riding on it in the last few weeks, and sent her for her first cartwheel down the track in what was a spectacular test of the Easton handlebars strength - let me tell you they are strong! The more riding I do on this bike, the more fun I am having, it's a blast! Although it is certainly teaching me to not be lazy, you can’t rest, ever. I had become so accustom to riding four-strokes, that the ease of a third gear inside line around a skatey flat turn was just to be expected to be possible on the 125 - not the case. Last weekend I headed out to Appin with a mate of mine, Grant, who is a pretty similar pace to me. I couldn’t believe how much easier he could do it on his four-stroke! Just riding a 125 fast takes so much more effort, and much more thinking on the bike than a new age four-strokes - I love it! It's harder to ride in a way, but the more laps I have done, the easier it is getting, and the more I wanna ride the thing out of fuel.

With a few more horses under the hood and a sweet suspension set-up when it returns from Jay's, a new ban on Maccas food being consumed and being dragged to the pool to train with Ben and Boothy to shed some kilos, the RM should be able to drag me into some decent results in the coming months.

The Likes
- So much fun to ride
- Super light
- the strength of the Easton Bars
- the looks of the new Tee n Cee Numbers
- The Zeta bling
- Having to work harder to get the most out of the bike
- Riding soft terrain on the dinger

The Dislikes
- The soft suspension
- not being allowed to eat maccas anymore
- The way the throttle grip is glued to the throttle tube (pain in the butt to remove!)
- Mixing fuel

Check out some pics of the bike and bits so far...

Low Bars

Ben Foster - Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Just a thought... but, as I've been looking at a crap load of pics from the MX Nationals over the last few days, I've picked up on something..

Seems like 80 per cent of the Lites field run the handlebars back in their lap somewhere, while 80 per cent of the Open riders run a more forward and upright bend of bar. What's the go? Why are the Lites guys running the bars so back, yet the Open guys forward?

is it an age thing (as most of the Lites guys are Younger) or is it something to do with horsepower and weight of the bike?

Who knows.. it's got me puzzled though.
